The award was created to celebrate the best design around the world and this year Icehotel is one of 4 finalists in the Sustainable category.</p><p>Located in Jukkasj&auml;rvi, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, Icehotel has over the past three decades created an experience made entirely out of snow and ice borrowed from the Torne River. The building is much more than just a hotel, it is a frozen art gallery, carefully designed and handcrafted by around 40 artists from all around the world.</p><p>-<em> We are humbly grateful for our finalist spot in this year&rsquo;s Sustainable category at the HD Awards. Nature has always been central to the hotel and since 1989, Icehotel has been reincarnated every winter with snow and ice from the Torne River. During the spring, the hotel melts and the water reunites with the river, this creates a sustainable and natural cycle, says Malin Franck, CEO of Icehotel.</em></p><p>The basic idea of the hotel is built on the premises of the environmental cycle, and their relationship to water and ice is central. Every year, 600 tons of naturally cultivated ice is borrowed from Sweden&#039;s largest and northernmost national river, the Torne River. The ice is harvested 50 meters from the upcoming winter hotel and stored in a warehouse where the cold climate acts as a natural refrigerator for most of the year and is backed up with the help of solar energy during the summer.</p><p>The hotel&#039;s view of sustainability extends beyond just the construction of the seasonal hotel, it is implemented in everything from the operation of the business to the restaurants and activities. The kitchen uses local ingredients such as moss, moose, and mushrooms from the forest and fish from the river. During the nature activities that the hotel&#039;s guides carry out, you will always find educational elements where the guests can learn about everything from the northern lights to how to make a fire.
