Each spring, a new design takes shape in snow and ice at ICEBAR Stockholm. Last Friday, March 13, this year’s edition opened – inviting guests to enjoy a drink in a frozen world inspired by Norse mythology.

The new ICEBAR has been created by artists Tjåsa Gusfors (Sweden) and Isabelle Gasse (Canada), who first met while designing art suites at ICEHOTEL. The bar is built from 40 tonnes of natural ice, harvested from the Torne River in Jukkasjärvi, and is located at Hotel C in central Stockholm.

A living artwork in ice and snow

Inside ICEBAR, visitors are invited on a journey inspired by Yggdrasil – the mythical tree that connects the nine worlds of Norse mythology.

From the powerful roots where the Norns weave the threads of life, through the realm of the gods and upwards to Valhalla where fallen heroes gather, guests are surrounded by hand-carved details in ice and snow. Monumental sculptures and dramatic environments create an immersive experience where every step becomes part of Yggdrasil’s story.

“We wanted to create a place where guests can truly experience the mythology – a living artwork in ice, where the story unfolds around you,” say Isabelle Gasse and Tjåsa Gusfors.

Experience a part of northern Sweden – in the heart of Stockholm

Stepping into ICEBAR Stockholm is stepping into a living piece of the nature in northern Sweden. Everything is made of ice – even the glasses your drink is served in, carved from ice from the Torne River.

To keep warm, guests are provided with a cape and gloves before entering the sub-zero environment.

ICEBAR Stockholm has been located at Hotel C since 2002, with a new design created every year. Following the recent opening of ICEBAR Copenhagen, ICEBAR London will soon open its doors.

The artists
\u200bTjåsa Gusfors (Sweden) has collaborated with ICEHOTEL for over 25 years, combining art, theatre and music in her work. She works with ice, snow, wood, sand and concrete, and is known for her expressive, material-driven approach.

Isabelle Gasse (Québec, Canada) began sculpting snow at the age of 16 and now works internationally with ice, sand, wood and film. Her background in film brings a strong narrative dimension to her artistic expression.

About ICEBAR by ICEHOTEL Stockholm ICEBAR by ICEHOTEL Stockholm is the world’s first permanent ice bar, redesigned every year. Since opening in 2002, it has become a popular attraction for both international visitors and locals seeking a taste of the northern Sweden in the centre of Stockholm.
