Artists selected - they will create the art inside ICEHOTEL 37 this upcoming winter
Record-Breaking International Interest in Creating ICEHOTEL 37
JUKKASJÄRVI, SWEDEN. Spring has arrived in Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden, and the seasonal part of ICEHOTEL is slowly melting back into its origin - the Torne River. While this year’s ice art disappears, preparations for next winter are already well underway. Following record-breaking international interest, the jury has now selected the 28 artists who will create the art of ICEHOTEL 37.
A total of 293 creatives from around the world applied to take part in shaping this winter’s hotel - the highest number of applications in ICEHOTEL’s history. The selected artists represent 14 countries, including New Zealand, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Italy, Spain, India and Sweden. Meanwhile, 2,000 tons of crystal-clear natural ice have already been harvested from the Torne River and stored, waiting to be transformed into this winter’s ephemeral art experience.
A Meeting Between Experience and New Perspectives This year’s artistic process is shaped by an exciting dynamic: half of the selected artists are highly experienced in working with ice and snow, while the other half will explore the material for the very first time.
– It is incredible to witness a new application record for ICEHOTEL 37. We feel deeply grateful that artists from around the world continue, after 37 years, to be inspired by what we create here in Jukkasjärvi. The fact that half of the selected artists have never applied before makes us both proud and humbled - it truly reflects the global attraction and creative power of ICEHOTEL, says Luca Roncoroni, Creative Director at ICEHOTEL.
From Vision to Reality – This Year’s Artistic Concepts On December 11, ICEHOTEL 37 will once again open its doors. Imagine stepping into a magical Ceremony Hall where giant ice prisms refract the light, diving into an icy pool inside the art suite “The Cold Descent”, or spending the night in Antarctica surrounded by curious Emperor Penguins hand sculpted from ice in “The Emperors Suite”. These are just some of the artistic concepts that will come to life this winter.
– The artistic vision for ICEHOTEL 37 is beginning to take shape, and as always, we are incredibly excited. At the end of November, these 28 artists will gather here in Jukkasjärvi together with our experienced production team to transform ice and snow into unforgettable experiences for guests from around the world, says Marie Herrey, CEO of ICEHOTEL.
Nature Leads the Way – Year Round When the Construction of ICEHOTEL 37 begins in mid-November, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, 2,800 square meters of ice and snow will once again be transformed into a temporary hotel and art exhibition entirely created from natural ice and snow. When spring arrives, the seasonal part of the hotel melts back into the river, while ICEHOTEL 365 remains open year-round with its ICEBAR and 18 unique art suites and deluxe suites made of ice and snow.
Right now, summer is just around the corner in Jukkasjärvi. Here, winter and summer exist side by side; guests can wake up surrounded by ice art in sub-zero temperatures, warm up in a private sauna and take a morning plunge in the Torne River - all under the midnight sun. Summer in Jukkasjärvi is short, intense and shaped by nature’s contrasts. And as the first freezing temperatures return in autumn, the creation of ICEHOTEL 37 begins once again — ready to welcome the world on December 11.
