Artists wanted for next season's Icehotel

Almost 30 years ago Icehotel was created for the first time in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. Since then a new hotel has been created by artists from all over the world – every year. Do you want to create your own suite in the 30threndition of Icehotel? Apply before May 6 2019.
Icehotel is an ephemeral art project made of ice and snow from Torne River and every year new art suites have emerged during the creation of Icehotel. What designs, enhancements or completely new features you would like to see at Icehotel in the future? Thoughtful, crazy, innovative, creative or beautiful – there are no rules for how the suites should look. The only requirement is that they must be original designs and include a bed – and everything has to be made from ice and snow.
Ice art in tune with nature
By tradition, the actual making of the hotel is an art forum, whereby the selected suite designers gather in Jukkasjärvi to use the ice and snow as a canvas for their art. Each room is an installation, an original piece of art, that melts and returns to Mother Nature in spring.
Luca Roncoroni is the Creative Director of Icehotel. He came as an apprentice to Icehotel in 2001 and since then his love for ice and snow has been growing for each ice art project he has been involved in. He is also part of the jury that selects the artists for Icehotel #30. He says:
“Doing a project at ICEHOTEL is a unique opportunity to work with ephemeral materials, with light, and ultimately with nature. I love the idea that our creations will change every day throughout the season, providing unforgettable experiences for the guests, and finally, they´ll go back to the majestic Torne River.”
Application & deadline
It doesn’t matter if you have worked with ice and snow before – just submit your application. If you’re selected, Icehotel will show you and your fellow artists some basics about the material and the tools. The artist teams are responsible for completing their suites at Icehotel, but there is also a support team that can advise you on design and construction and a lighting team to assist you with the lighting of your suite.
Each spring Icehotel opens up for new designers and artists to apply. A jury that assesses the applications based on concept, innovativeness, visualization, and description will select the 15 artist teams. The selected artists will be invited to Jukkasjärvi for two weeks in November-December turning the ice from Torne River into art.

ABOUT ICEHOTEL
ICEHOTEL opened in 1989 and is beside a hotel also an art exhibition with ever-changing art out of ice and snow. ICEHOTEL is created in a new guise every winter, completely made out of natural ice from Torne River, one of Sweden’s national rivers and last untouched waters. When the winter season’s Icehotel has melted back into the river in the spring, a part of the hotel remains; a place where visitors can experience the ice and snow year-round.
