The artist application for the next winter season’s ICEHOTEL is now open and you got the chance to submit your design. What kind of art would you like to see at ICEHOTEL next winter? Welcome to apply.
It's not long until the seasonal part of ICEHOTEL will melt back into its source in Torne River. Right now, the ice harvest is in full swing, where the massive ice blocks that will shape next year’s hotel are reaped from the river.
At the same time, the artist application has opened, so if you want to create your own suite in the 29threndition of ICEHOTEL,apply before May 6, 2018.
Icehotel is more than a hotel with rooms and beds; it is an ephemeral art project made of ice and snow from Torne River. Every year, for almost 30 years, new art suites of ice and snow have emerged during the creation of ICEHOTEL. By tradition, the actual making of the hotel is an art forum, whereby the selected suite designers gather in Jukkasjärvi to use the ice and snow as a canvas for their art. Each room is an installation, an original piece of art, that melts and returns to Mother Nature in spring.
Create an art suite out of ice and snow
What designs, enhancements or completely new features you would like to see at Icehotel in the future? Thoughtful, crazy, innovative, creative or beautiful – there are no rules for how the suites should look. The only requirement is that they must be original designs and include a bed – and everything has to be made from ice and snow.
Arne Bergh is an artist and creative advisor at Icehotel and is involved in the creative process.
“Ice has an interesting effect on creativity. Since it’s not a permanent material, people aren’t afraid of trying ideas they otherwise wouldn’t dare to test,” he says.
“It doesn’t matter if you have worked with ice and snow before – just submit your application. If you’re selected, Icehotel will show you and your fellow artists some basics about the material and the tools. The artist teams are responsible for completing their suites at Icehotel, but there is also a support team that can advise you on design and construction and a lighting team to assist you with the lighting of your suite.”
Application & Deadline
Each spring, Icehotel opens up for new designers and artists to apply. A jury that assesses the applications based on concept, innovativeness, visualization, and description will select the artists. The selected artists will be invited to Jukkasjärvi for two weeks in November-December.

ICEHOTEL is created in a new guise every winter, completely made out of natural ice from Torne River, one of Sweden's national rivers and last untouched waters.
