Even more art at Icehotel this year - Icehotel opens "the Gallery" with the exhibition "A Northern Lights Dream"

“Night time reflections” – by artist Johan Vall

Every year, art is created from ice and snow at Icehotel, which attracts visitors from near and far. This year there will be more art than usual at Icehotel, when the art gallery "The Gallery" opens. Behind the venture is photographer and artist Asaf Kliger, who has worked as a photographer for Icehotel for several years. Asaf Kliger opened an art gallery in Lund in 2020, and from now there is another gallery at Icehotel.

For many years, Icehotel has been one of northern Sweden's largest private art galleries, and in the newly opened art gallery you can experience even more art. At the exhibition "A Northern Lights Dream", 12 selected artists from northern Sweden exhibit photographs, video art, songs, and sculptures entirely dedicated to the mythical northern lights. At this exhibition you can experience and contemplate the magic these artists encounter during freezing and dark nights when most others are fast asleep.

– We’re excited that, after several years of collaboration with Asaf, we can start a new project at Icehotel and presenting a new experience to our guests. Having such an amazing collection of pictures of the Northern Lights will be a great addition to the art and design experience at Icehotel, and the guests will have the chance to purchase the photos and bring back a piece of arctic Lapland to their homes, says Luca Roncoroni, Creative Director at Icehotel.

The northern lights, or Aurora Borealis in Latin, have fascinated us humans throughout the ages and experiencing the dancing phenomenon that moves in the sky during dark nights is something many only dream of. But just north of the Arctic Circle where we are, is one of the best areas in the world to experience the Northern Lights due to the long, dark winters and solar storms throwing particles towards the Earth's poles.

The idea for the exhibition came from Kliger Gallery´s founder, photographer Asaf Kliger, who has spent many winters in Jukkasjärvi and was fascinated by the magical power of the northern light.

– Starry nights with the northern lights and the snow-covered winter landscape that lights up he dark makes me lose sense of both time and space. I know that so many dream of seeing and experiencing this special phenomenon and this is how the idea of this exhibition came to light. I selected 12 local artists, all of whom live and work under the northern lights, to participate in this exhibition, says the artist Asaf Kliger, initiator of “The Gallery”.

Twelve artists participate in the exhibition and what they all have in common is that when most people are sleeping under their warm blankets, those artists are out in the cold and dark to capture the magic of the sky.

– When the light dances in the sky, I am filled with a sense of the present and I can't stop leaning backwards, my head and my eyes "up". It's big and it feels mighty magical, you wonder what forces are out there? We are so small!, says artist Lena Kriström.

“The Gallery” and the exhibition “A Northerns Lights Dream” open its doors Friday December 16th 2022 and is open for visitors until December 1st 2023.

About Icehotel AB

The ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi is both a world-unique hotel and an art exhibition crafted from snow and ice.

Inspired by the Torne River, the first small gallery showcased art made from the river’s frozen waters. Since then, ICEHOTEL has been reborn in a new form each winter - a magical and fleeting creation that melts back into the river as the spring sun warms.

Now, over 30 years since we began, it’s possible to enjoy this magical experience all year round. ICEHOTEL 365, cooled by solar power, maintains a steady minus-five-degree temperature, allowing our guests to marvel at fantastic ice creations even under the midnight sun in summer.
