EXPERIENCE THE AUTUMN'S MAGICAL NORTHERN LIGHTS AT ICEHOTEL

Photographer: Tomas Jönsson

Colorful Aurora Borealis dancing across the sky is an enchanting sight. The season for the northern lights is here and Icehotel offers guests from all over the world the opportunity to experience the magical natural phenomenon and sleep among art created from ice and snow. This already before the arctic winter arrives.

The northern lights, which also go by the name polar lights, are a light phenomenon that occurs when the solar wind collides with atoms and molecules in the Earth's atmosphere. Mainly the polar lights occur around the earth's two magnetic poles and in the northern hemisphere, the polar light is called northern light, Aurora Borealis in Latin.

Jukkasjärvi, where the Icehotel is located, is one of the world's best places to see the Aurora Borealis and it is not unusual to see the northern lights dancing over the world's first – and largest – hotel built of ice and snow. Since Icehotel 365 opened its doors in 2016, it has created the possibility to visit Icehotel and live among art made of ice all year round, and now also catch the autumn's first northern lights during the dark and clear autumn evenings.

Contrary to the general belief that the winter is the best time to catch a glimpse of the northern lights, autumn is just as good, if not better, as the season for northern lights viewing. The evenings are long and the lack of the reflective, white snow that has yet to arrive makes the darkness compact. Temperatures are milder, hovering between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius, which is a plus if you're hoping to capture the colorful spectacle in pictures.

Enjoy dinner in the wilderness, inspired by the flavors and ingredients of autumn. The guests who participate in a Northern Lights dinner will visit one of the hotel's wilderness campers, in the middle of nature, completely without artificial light. On-site, they enjoy a warm aperitif in front of the fire while hearing about all the myths and legends of the Aurora Borealis. The evening's guide serves a three-course dinner inside a warm cabin where the menu is inspired by nature and the ingredients found in the surrounding forest. Hopefully, the northern lights will also show up, dancing in the dark sky.

This can be combined with a night of ice and snow in Icehotel 365, the world's first and only ice hotel that is open all year round. Here you can sleep among art made of ice, where all rooms are individually created and hand-sculpted by artists from all over the world. Some of the suites also have warm bathrooms with private saunas and relaxation areas.

About Icehotel AB

The ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi is both a world-unique hotel and an art exhibition crafted from snow and ice.

Inspired by the Torne River, the first small gallery showcased art made from the river’s frozen waters. Since then, ICEHOTEL has been reborn in a new form each winter - a magical and fleeting creation that melts back into the river as the spring sun warms.

Now, over 30 years since we began, it’s possible to enjoy this magical experience all year round. ICEHOTEL 365, cooled by solar power, maintains a steady minus-five-degree temperature, allowing our guests to marvel at fantastic ice creations even under the midnight sun in summer.
