Icebar by Icehotel Stockholm is selected as one of the nominees in the category NGO/CSR/Good Will during this year's edition of the prestigious Swedish Design Award, which is presented during a gala dinner at Berns in Stockholm.
For the eighteenth year in a row, the nominations for the Swedish Design Award has been presented. The award was created to celebrate those working in graphic design, design, and similar creative fields. The winners are voted through a weighting based on 50% of the jury's votes and 50% of the people's votes, and will later be presented during a gala dinner at Berns in Stockholm on October 21.
Icebar was born in 1994 in Jukkasjärvi, a small village in Arctic Sweden. The name means meeting place in Sami. Here, next to the Torne River, people have gathered for hundreds of years and still do today. Now it is spectacular creations of ice and snow that attract travelers from all over the world.
Back in 2002, the visionary Yngve Bergqvist, founder of Icehotel, together with the artists Åke Larsson and Arne Bergh, decided to expand the Icebar concept and create a unique Arctic experience in cities around the world. Icebar would become another meeting place in true Icehotel spirit and Icebar by Icehotel Stockholm was the very first permanent Icebar in the world.
Over the years, dozens of designers from around the world have designed amazing creations and experiences. Millions of guests have enjoyed drinks at -5 ° C, served in the iconic Ice Glass by Icehotel, contemplating unique art, entirely made of ice.
The new design ´BRIGHT ICE BIG CITY´ created by Charli Kasselbäck and John Bark celebrates an important milestone for a vision that started twenty years ago by Icehotel, with the opening of the world's first permanent Icebar.
- There is a magical place in central Stockholm, a glimmering bar where the ice of the north merges with the neon lights of the big city streets – a passage of bright ice that transports you to the land of Aurora Borealis and the star-filled polar nights of the north. Icebar 20 is a celebration in neon created by Icebar by Icehotel Stockholm, and this year it turns twenty years old. - says Charli Kasselbäck & John Bark, designers.
Icehotel is constantly looking for new solutions and for the 20th anniversary of Icebar by Icehotel, they decided to use lighting in a completely new way, by embedding 300 meters of "light thread" directly into the ice blocks, once again pushing the boundary of innovation in ice design.
The result is a sensorial experience out of the ordinary, with light pulsating from within the ice, creating a space on the borderline between the Arctic landscape and the urbanscape.
A massive 40 tons of crystal-clear ice from the Torne River was used to build the new Icebar by Icehotel Stockholm. This time, the design and production team was much larger than usual, involving 13 people, who worked for 6 months in Jukkasjärvi, before coming to Stockholm to build the bar, fine-tune the lighting, and finally welcoming the first guests.
- We are humbly grateful for our nomination in the NGO/CSR/Good Will category during this year's edition of the Swedish Design Award. - Says Luca Roncoroni, Creative Director at Icehotel.
The voting takes place via the Swedish Design Awards website and is open for the category NGO/CSR/Good Will from 26 September to 2 October.
